Question
Where can you play free brain games online?
Short answer
Many brain-game apps have a free tier, though many are phone apps. Wits plays in your web browser with a free account: Dot Path, a daily logic puzzle, plus Color Clash and Word Code. All 43 Wits games are in the iPhone app, which is on the App Store.
We make Wits. Facts about other apps come from their own sites and App Store listings, checked November 7, 2026. No ratings or scores.
What âfreeâ usually means
Free brain games come in a few shapes. Some apps give you a set number of games a day; Elevateâs free plan, for example, includes one three-game workout a day. Some are free with ads, as Impulseâs App Store listing says it is. Many offer a free trial of a paid tier, which turns into a subscription unless you cancel in time.
None of that is a problem if you know what youâre getting. Before you settle on a free game, check how many games you get each day, whether there are ads, and whether a trial needs a payment method up front.
Why many free games ask for an account
An account is how a game knows itâs you: it keeps your plan and anything youâve paid for, and it keeps your play apart from anyone else who uses the same device.
Wits asks for a free account to play on the web. On the website, your Wits account stores your email, your Premium status, your name and your settings. Web game levels and stars and your setup answers stay in the browser you play in, one copy per account, so other browsers and devices keep their own. Creating one is free. The iPhone app doesnât need an account: your progress there is saved on your phone, separate from the web. Premium is optional and is for the iPhone app.
An account doesnât have to mean handing over much. On the website, Wits signs you in with a one-time code sent to your email address, so thereâs no password to remember.
What you can play free on the Wits website
With a free Wits account, three games play in your browser:
| Game | Skill | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Dot Path | Reasoning | Draw one line through every blue dot, avoiding the red ones. A new level opens each day, with no timer. |
| Color Clash | Focus | Tap the color of the ink, not the word, unless the banner says WORD. |
| Word Code | Language | Guess the hidden word from green and gold letter clues. |
Dot Path is the daily puzzle, so your day on the web is Dot Path plus Color Clash and Word Code. The website doesnât show ads.
What the iPhone app adds
The iPhone app has all 43 Wits games across six skills. Free players get Dot Path, Sort It, Word Wheel, Speed Math, Card Pairs and Color Clash, plus daily trivia. In the iPhone app, Premium unlocks every game and lesson for $39.99 a year with 3 days free for new subscribers, or $6.99 a week. The free plan in the app shows ads between games. Premium removes the ads between games; reward videos stay optional.
Wits for iPhone is available on the App Store.
Other free ways to practice
Brain games donât have to come from an app. A few free options that work well:
- The crossword or number puzzle in a newspaper, or a puzzle book from your local library.
- Chess puzzles, where you find the best move in a set position.
- Mental math in daily life, like totaling a grocery bill or working out a tip in your head.
- Quizzing yourself: after reading an article, look away and recall the main points.
Getting the most from free games
A free tier goes further than you might expect if you use it well:
- Give a game a week before judging it; the first rounds are always the slowest.
- Use a daily puzzle as your anchor, then add whatever else you have time for.
- Try at least one game from each skill, then keep the ones you enjoy.
- Upgrade only when you know which extra games you want.
Playing safely
A few habits keep free games free:
- Read what a site asks for before you sign up; a free game shouldnât need much more than an email address.
- Check whether a free trial needs a payment method, and set a reminder before it ends.
- Look for a privacy page that says whatâs stored.
- Be wary of sites that make big promises about intelligence or health.
