How to make a daily brain-game habit stick

Practical ways to turn a few minutes of brain games into a daily habit: pick a small goal, attach it to something you already do, and don’t worry about a missed day.

Start smaller than you think

Key idea

A habit you can do on a bad day lasts longer than one you can only do on a good day. Five minutes is enough to start; you can raise it later.

Attach it to something you already do

Pick a moment that already happens every day: with your morning coffee, on the bus, or when you’d otherwise open a social feed before bed.

Expect it to take weeks

In a study by Phillippa Lally and colleagues at University College London, published in 2010, volunteers each built one new daily eating, drinking or exercise habit. Among those whose data fit the researchers’ model, the median time to reach 95% of their own peak sense of automaticity was 66 days, ranging from 18 to 254. That was about health habits, not games, and it was a small study, but it’s a useful reminder that a few weeks in is still early.

Worth knowing

The same study found that missing a single day didn’t materially set people back.

Keep it varied and short

Mixing skills keeps things interesting. The Wits iPhone app gives you Dot Path and a set of quick games each day from different skills, so no two days feel the same.
